Back to back premierships
It may have taken 30 years to get there once, but it only took 12 months to get there again - and retain the ACT Monaro first division premiership.
In a much more dour and tough affair than last year, Goulburn beat Cooma by 17 - 10 having closed the half-time account with a five to nil lead. It was hard fought and the players had squeezed every ounce of energy out of themselves in their succesful title defence.
Congrats to all onfield and off-field staff and helpers, supporters and especially players for another brilliant season and another brilliant result. It was a pleasure watching the Reds go around again. The club has also held it's presentation awards since the match so don't forget to check out the results in the news section.
Raffle sponsor wanted
The Annual Rugby Ball was once again a massive success - thanks to all who attended and to those who were generous with their donations. The money raised on the night is greatly appreciated by all branches of the club - Fizzy Reds, Tablelands Reds, Dirty Reds and Fermented Reds.
Fund raising is a year round activity though and we still have some plans for a major raffle. This is just a quick word to any potential sponsors that we direct to this page, to let them know we will give them major coverage on this site, in newsletters and through the Goulburn Post if they can assist with our major fund-raiser. We are hoping for a holiday in the gold coast - it doesn't hurt to hope. So if you are able to assist with a similar prize, please contact us on goulburnrugbyunion@hotmail.com and we'll provide all the promotion for you in return that we are able.
Junior draws now in Season Calendar
As you may know, there was an ongoing delay in the junior draws, mainly due to the need to let a few rounds be played before assessing the strength of teams and structuring graded competitions. Those draws are now created and can be found in the season calendar section on the left. There are plans to have big rugby days featuring all Tablelands Reds teams and Dirty Reds teams at Poidevin Oval this year. More news when we have it.
Statistics Update
The players statistics and match statistics have now been greatly updated. All match records from 1999 to 2007 are now included with the exception of the 2002 semi final and all of 2003. I'm not sure how we can get thhose bits of info but it's our intention to try. Ideally, if we could get the match sheets from Brumbies, we could have all Monaro stats included which would cover 1990 to present. The overall goal is to be able to give all players statistics on how many games they've played, points they have scored and so on.
If anyone has actualy match sheets (that include the names of all players as well as all scorers) please contact me at chris@gordonmultimedia.com.au so I can include them. Also, for most match sheets it didn't include the name of the team captain so if you can let me know the team captains for 1st and reserve grade from 1999 to 2007, I can include those stats. In the mean time, check out the online statistics link to the left.
Get Involved
Speaking of the committee members, it's worth reminding all of you that we are an amateur sporting club that exists on two main elements - the financial support of sponsors and the time and effort of volunteers.
Thanks to the sponsorship packages put together by Liz McLoughlin and Klemmy, a lot of the work securing sponsors has been done. The area we seem to be always in need of improvement in is the volunteers. The committee alone, many of whom are players, aren't able to do all of the tasks required to make the club function smoothly and so we once again urge supporters and friuends of the club to help us out.
On Friday nights the juniors need a hand with the running of the canteen, as do the seniors for home games. For both juniors and seniors, there are a range of tasks you can help out in and if you are able to offer aven an hour or two, it means you can help spread out the workload for those doing the jobs to date.
Two years ago, we dropped our membership costs from $20 (which is a pretty common rate across rugby clubs) down to $5 to encourage more people to become members and get involved. It is an exciting time in the club's history so whether you are a former player, or a friend, relative or parent of a player - junior or senior - consider becoming a member and getting involved. Once you do, you'll be hooked.
